What is a Dietetics and Nutrition consultation like?

First visit

In the first visit, the nutritionist evaluates the general state of health, including the study of eating habits, medical history and nutritional objectives of the patient. During this session, detailed information is collected through questionnaires and, if necessary, clinical analyses are requested, in order to design a personalized eating plan. This visit is essential to establish a solid foundation for nutritional treatment and monitoring.

Second and subsequent visits

These focus on monitoring the patient’s progress, adjusting the eating plan as needed, and addressing any challenges that arise. During these sessions, the physician assesses adherence to the dietary plan, changes in weight, and other parameters based on the pathology, and provides additional support and education to encourage healthy and sustainable eating habits. These visits are crucial to ensure that the patient is making progress toward their health and nutrition goals, making proactive adjustments and reinforcing motivation and commitment to dietary change.

Tools and online consultation

In a nutrition and dietetics consultation, a physician may use a variety of tools and methodologies to assess and guide patients on their path to healthy eating and a balanced lifestyle. Here are some of the most common:

  • Complete Medical History: This includes a review of the patient’s personal and family history of any illnesses that the patient may have had in the past or at present, pharmacological treatments, psychosocial situation, and any factor that may influence current nutritional needs.
  • Dietary Record and Diet Analysis: Patients may be asked to keep a food diary to record their daily intake and physical activity. This helps the physician assess current eating habits and identify areas for improvement.
  • Anthropometric Evaluation: Measurement of weight, height, body circumference, and body composition using electrical bioimpedance or plyometrics to assess nutritional status and body fat distribution.
  • Food Intolerance Test: Through blood or breath tests, food allergies or intolerances that influence the patient’s diet can be identified.
  • Personalized Meal Planning: Creation of diets adapted to the needs, preferences, and health conditions of the patient, covering specific energy, macronutrient, and micronutrient needs.
  • Nutrition Education: Providing educational resources and workshops to teach patients about nutrition, food label interpretation, healthy cooking techniques, and strategies for eating out.
  • Tracking and Monitoring: Using food-tracking apps or wearable devices to monitor a patient’s dietary intake and physical activity in real time.
  • Interdisciplinary Consultations: Collaborating with other health care professionals, such as psychologists, endocrinologists, or physical therapists, for a holistic approach to treatment.
  • Motivational Coaching Methodologies: Techniques such as motivational interviewing to help patients overcome psychological barriers for change and foster a lasting commitment to their health goals.

Nutritional coaching

Through regular sessions, the nutritional coach works closely with the patient to identify challenges, set realistic goals, and develop practical strategies that facilitate lasting changes in behavior. This not only improves nutritional status but also enhances overall psychological, physical, and social well-being. In addition, by fostering a better understanding of personal nutritional needs and teaching how to manage cravings and make conscious food choices, nutritional coaching empowers individuals to proactively take control of their health.

Diet to lose weight

Weight loss diets focus on creating a caloric deficit. These diets often involve modifying macronutrient intake, such as reducing carbohydrates or fat, to encourage the use of body fat stores. This change in diet along with an increase in physical activity will help the patient reach his goal. With proper study and planning, you can lose weight without going hungry and maintaining a healthy body composition (an adequate ratio between muscle and body fat).

Diet to gain muscle mass

A muscle mass gain diet focuses on a caloric surplus, ensuring that more calories are consumed than the body burns, to facilitate muscle growth. It is crucial to maintain a high protein intake, as they are the building blocks of muscles and support muscle repair and growth. In addition, an adequate balance of carbohydrates is recommended to provide the necessary energy for intense workouts and healthy fats to optimize recovery and hormonal function. This diet should be accompanied by a regular strength training program to stimulate muscle growth and be monitored by a professional to ensure a healthy and effective increase in muscle mass.

Dietary advice for population groups

Diets for population groups are food plans specifically designed to meet the unique nutritional needs of each life stage or physiological situation, such as childhood, adolescence, old age, pregnancy and lactation. These diets are tailored taking into account the specific nutrient requirements, growth rates, hormonal changes and energy demands of each population group.

A child who follows an incorrect or poor diet may experience growth and development problems, nutritional deficiencies that affect their immune system and their ability to concentrate and learn at school. In addition, it may increase the risk of developing long-term chronic diseases, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Nutrition for children is essential for their proper growth and development, providing the necessary nutrients to strengthen their immune system, maintain energy and support cognitive development. Diets should be balanced and varied, with an emphasis on foods rich in vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates and healthy fats. In addition, it is important to encourage healthy eating habits from an early age to establish a solid foundation for good health throughout life.

Teenagers

A nutritional plan for a teenager provides the necessary nutrients to support their growth, physical and mental development, as well as to maintain optimal energy levels. This can help optimize their academic, athletic and social performance, as well as establish healthy eating habits that last into adulthood. On the other hand, poor nutrition during adolescence can lead to nutritional deficiencies, health problems such as obesity, eating disorders, a higher risk of chronic diseases in adulthood and negatively affect physical and emotional development. This is why it is essential to provide teenagers with a balanced diet and educate them about the importance of healthy eating.

This includes nutrients such as folic acid, iron, calcium, iodine, and protein, which are essential for the development of the baby’s nervous system, the formation of bones and teeth, and the proper functioning of vital organs. In addition,Proper nutrition can help prevent pregnancy complications such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, and premature birth, and promote postpartum recovery.

On the other hand, poor nutrition during pregnancy can increase the risk of complications for the mother and baby, such as low birth weight, birth defects, poor fetal growth, premature birth, and complications during delivery. It is essential for pregnant women to follow specific dietary guidelines and receive adequate nutritional care to ensure a healthy pregnancy and the well-being of both mother and baby.

Menopause

A nutritional plan for a person going through menopause can help mitigate associated symptoms such as hot flashes, osteoporosis, and weight gain. A diet rich in calcium and vitamin D can strengthen bones and reduce the risk of osteoporosis, while foods rich in phytoestrogens can help balance hormone levels. In addition, a balanced diet can help control weight, improve cardiovascular health, and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

On the other hand, poor nutrition during menopause can exacerbate symptoms, such as increased bone loss and the onset of chronic diseases, such as osteoporosis, heart disease, and diabetes. It is essential to adopt healthy eating habits during menopause to promote overall well-being and reduce the risk of age-related complications.

Elderly

A nutritional plan for a senior can provide the nutrients needed to maintain optimal health, strengthen the immune system, and prevent chronic diseases. A balanced and varied diet can help maintain muscle mass, prevent osteoporosis and sarcopenia, and reduce the risk of falls and fractures. In addition, proper nutrition can promote cardiovascular health, improve cognitive function, and maintain a healthy weight.

On the other hand, poor nutrition in old age can lead to nutritional deficiencies, weakening of the immune system, loss of muscle mass, bone fragility and increased risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and dementia. It is essential that older adults follow a balanced diet and receive adequate nutritional care to ensure a good quality of life and well-being at this stage of life.

It is also very important to adapt the diet to problems with chewing-swallowing, dysphagia, lack of appetite and other conditions typical of old age.

Therapeutic diets

A nutritional plan adapted to pathologies or chronic diseases can help control symptoms, improve quality of life and reduce the risk of complications. In addition, it can help regulate blood glucose levels, blood pressure, cholesterol and body weight, as well as reduce inflammation and strengthen the immune system. Many patients come to our office for intestinal health problems. These are patients who have suffered, in some cases, for years, from digestive discomfort, intolerances, reflux, intestinal gas, constipation, diarrhea… They may also have skin problems, joint problems, headaches, or exhaustion.
