Details of included tests
HIV
This test detects HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies. It determines if the patient’s immune system is responding to the presence of the virus.
Hepatitis B
- HBsAg (Hepatitis B Surface Antigen): Detects if the virus is currently present. If positive, the person has the infection (acute or chronic) and can transmit it.
- Surface antibodies (Anti-HBs): Detects if the person is immune. This occurs because they have been successfully vaccinated or because they overcame the infection in the past and are now cured.
- Core antibodies (Anti-HBc): Detects if the person has been in contact with the actual virus at some point in their life. Unlike the vaccine (which only shows a positive result for surface antibodies), this marker indicates a past or present infection.
Hepatitis C
Anti-HCV antibodies: Detects if the patient has been in contact with the Hepatitis C virus at some point. A positive result here does not always mean that the person is currently ill; it only indicates that the body has produced antibodies. To confirm if the infection is active, a follow-up test called PCR (viral load) is usually required.
Syphilis (RPR)
The RPR (Rapid Plasma Reagin) test is a non-treponemal test. It detects non-specific antibodies that the body produces when there is cell damage caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It is used for rapid screening.
Considering the window periods, when is the best time to get a basic STI test?
In a basic blood test (HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and syphilis), counting from the day of risky sexual contact:
- From the 2nd week, we can detect Hepatitis B infection
- From the 3rd week, we can detect Syphilis infection.
- From the 4th week, HIV.
- From the 8th week, Hepatitis C.
- At 12 weeks (3 months), the result is definitive and conclusive to rule out these infections with complete certainty.
What do we recommend?
If the risky contact was recent, you can take an initial test at 4–6 weeks to We can guide you. If you have symptoms (lesions, fever, swollen lymph nodes, rashes, etc.), you can come in without waiting for the window period. For a completely reliable confirmation, it is advisable to get tested 12 weeks (3 months) after potential exposure.

Do I need any kind of medical prescription or referral to get tested for STDs?

No. This service only includes taking samples and preparing a report with the test results, which basically states whether a test has been positive or negative. Our private general medicine consultation has an additional cost of €70, and is also covered by some insurance companies.
What do I do if I test positive for STDs?
The protocol is different depending on the disease detected and the medical history of each patient. It is necessary to consult with a general practitioner to establish the steps to follow.
