HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) is a technology based on the use of ultrasound that has a multitude of applications in modern medicine. In aesthetic medicine, HIFU is used to perform a procedure known as non-surgical lifting (or ultralifting). With Facial HIFU we can smooth wrinkles and folds, lift and define the areas of the eyes or lips, or correct sagging neck. With body HIFU, we can reduce sagging arms and legs, reduce and tighten the abdominal contour, and even destroy localized fat.
How does HIFU work?
HIFU is used to perform micro-abrasions on the tissues between the skin and the muscle. After receiving micro-abrasions, these tissues begin a regeneration process that stimulates the production of collagen and elastin. As a result, the treated skin surface improves its consistency and elasticity.
Thanks to the physical properties of ultrasound, HIFU can burn under the skin without affecting the surface of the skin. HIFU sessions are very discreet, do not leave visible marks and allow you to go about your normal life as soon as you leave the office.
Facial HIFU – areas
By applying HIFU to the face we can achieve two effects: on the one hand, the so-called lifting without surgery, and on the other, rejuvenation. The areas in which we can apply the treatment are:
- Forehead
- Between the eyebrows
- Crow’s feet
- Nasolabial area
- Lip contour
- Cheeks
- Double chin
- Neck
- Decolletage
HIFU Body – areas
HIFU treatments on the body are mainly used to correct sagging skin and, to a lesser extent, to reduce body fat. The areas we can treat are:
- Arms
- Thighs
- Saddlebags
- In men, it is usually used to reduce the abdomen and its flanks.
- In women, the most common treatments are wrinkles, neckline, breasts, arms, abdomen, flanks, buttocks, or thighs.
HIFU before and after results
How does HIFU technology work?
HIFU technology bases its operation on the physical properties of ultrasound waves. When we focus the ultrasound appropriately on a point, we trigger a thermo-mechanical effect (heat) with which we can treat tissues (or destroy them, if we apply sufficient intensity). The effect is similar to what we can achieve with a magnifying glass under sunlight: when we focus the light rays on a point, we can generate heat and even burn objects.
In addition, the physical properties of ultrasound make it possible for ultrasonic waves to be conducted through the soft tissues of the body, so we do not need to make any incisions on the skin to treat the tissues underneath.
Example of how HIFU works during the destruction of tumor tissue
HIFU Ultrasonix
At Clínica Magnasalud we have HIFU Ultrasonix equipment, the most advanced high-intensity microfocused ultrasound treatment for facial lifting without surgery, the technique on which it is based has been the only one approved by the FDA (American drug agency) in the United States as a non-invasive lifting treatment.
What is the difference between ultrasound and radiofrequency?
The difference is in the way each transmits energy. While ultrasound transmits mechanical energy, radiofrequency transmits electromagnetic energy. Both transform into thermal energy (diathermy).
Are ultrasounds dangerous?
No. HIFU lifting uses ultrasounds with a much lower intensity than that needed to damage tissue.
Is the HIFU Ultrasonix treatment painful?
Most patients treated with Ultrasonix report tolerable pain or discomfort during the procedure; however, this pain is managed by the specialist technician according to each patient with top-quality topical anesthetic products, which allow for a significant reduction in pain and increased patient comfort during the procedure.
Is HIFU useful for reducing body fat?
Yes. High Intensity Focused Ultrasound works with controlled pressure on the skin releasing heat, in this way the fat cells do not resist the vibrations at this temperature and break easily. Subsequently, the fat is eliminated through the body, thereby reducing centimeters and cellulite.
How many HIFU sessions are necessary to see results?
The vast majority of patients only need one treatment session; however, patients with severe laxity may require a greater number of sessions. Annual treatment is recommended to slow down the rate of skin aging.
Recommendations after treatment
In the days following treatment, it is recommended to follow a diet rich in vegetables, soy, and fresh fish to reinforce the skin’s collagen production and obtain better results.
Side effects of HIFU
Unlike other more aggressive treatments such as laser or surgery, HIFU works with millimetric precision, and affects only and exclusively the points that need to be treated. Most patients do not experience any side effects, but in some cases the following may occur:
- Edema (swelling): This is mild and disappears within a few days of treatment.
- Redness: This is a consequence of the heat and resolves within a few hours of treatment.
- Pain and sensitivity to touch: Some patients report a slight feeling of discomfort during the application of ultrasound. Others may feel discomfort when touching the newly treated area. These symptoms are temporary and resolve within a few hours.
- Bruising: In certain parts of the body, slight damage to blood vessels may occur, which disappears within a few days as if it were a normal blow.
- Muscle weakness, numbness or tingling: This occurs when applied to specific parts of the body, and is generally due to inflammation of motor nerves or sensory nerves. In no case does it cause permanent damage.
- Scars. Extremely rare, they can occur when the treatment is applied by unqualified personnel.
Contraindications
It is not recommended to apply HIFU in:
- Skin areas affected by mechanical, metallic implants, fillers, electronic implants in the face or neck
- Pregnant or lactating women
- People under 20 years of age
- Skin areas with open wounds, skin lesions or severe acne
- Patients who present cases of: hemostatic dysfunction or bleeding disorders, dermatological diseases, herpes, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, epilepsy and Bell’s palsy.
