4D/5D ultrasound is a prenatal diagnostic procedure that allows you to view a baby’s size, movement, and face in real time during pregnancy. In addition to capturing video, the Magnasalud Clinic ultrasound machine also allows you to capture the sound of the baby’s heartbeat (see minute 20 of the video).
When is the best week for a 4D/5D ultrasound?
A 4D ultrasound can be performed from week 16 of pregnancy. From this moment on, the fetus can be seen in its entire body and its first movements can be appreciated: it tries to suck, it grips its fingers, and it is possible to see if it prefers to rest on the wall of the uterus or on the placenta. Its heartbeat can also be heard using the stereoscope.
The best time is around week 28, when it is best formed and has the best postural disposition. During this period, its face is practically formed, it reacts to sound stimuli and sometimes it yawns, smiles and even sucks its thumb.
After week 30, it is no longer recommended because it may not be visible, due to the fetus being too large, being poorly positioned or there being little amniotic fluid.
How long does it last
The session lasts between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on how difficult it is to find and focus on the baby. The generation of the report and the recording of the DVD take up to 30 more minutes. The patient can choose to wait and take them with her on the spot, or pick them up another day.
What is delivered
A report containing position and measurement data, 6 printed photos and a video with sound on a DVD suitable for home players and computers. All the captured images are also recorded on the DVD. And if the patient brings a USB flash drive, a copy of the files can be made.
Differences between 4D and 5D ultrasound
4D and 5D ultrasound are practically the same, with the exception that 5D technology makes ultrasounds with higher resolution and higher image quality.
Can I come with someone?
Yes, up to 5 companions can be in the consultation without any problem. However, we recommend coming with the least number of companions possible, since the procedure requires a calm environment for both the mother and the specialist.
What happens if the baby is not clearly visible?
Sometimes the position of the fetus makes it impossible to perform the ultrasound. In these cases, the appointment is postponed to the same day (if there is space in the schedule) or to another day, as long as that day is within the recommended weeks. Postponing the appointment does not entail any additional cost.
What happens if I have twins?
The 4D ultrasound for twins has an extra cost of €40 and takes a little longer because shots are taken for each twin.
Is a 4D ultrasound useful for determining the sex of the baby?
Yes, from week 17 onwards. This type of ultrasound is more focused on showing the baby’s face. However, if the position is good, it is possible to see the sex.
How is a 4D / 5D ultrasound performed?
The pregnant woman lies face up on the examination table, leaving her abdomen exposed. The sonographer covers the pregnant woman’s abdomen with gel and then slides the examination probe over it. While the probe slides over the abdomen, images are shown on the ultrasound screen and on an auxiliary screen located in front of the pregnant woman.
During the session, several shots are taken: 4D, 2D and the sound of the heartbeat. The shots are captured in images and on video to later record them on DVD. The examination is performed with a high-end GE Voluson 730 Expert ultrasound scanner, one of the highest-performance devices on the market.
